The Tornado of Grief, Trauma and Performance

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

I have been accused of using both a picture and a thousand words to describe things at times. 😄😄

When discussing the connections between trauma and grief in the workplace and the ensuing performance issues with leaders, the image described in this video drives great clarity.

We call it the “Tornado of Grief,” and it clarifies that any traumatic event that alters a person’s sense of reality will cause a person to grieve. This includes employees’ responses to organizational change.

This image also helps leaders visualize why 75% of change initiatives fail and why 70% of those failures are due to “human/cultural issues,” according to studies by Harvard and McKinsey.

Acknowledging the emotions of grief and change allows organizations to deal with the issues effectively, but only if their leaders are trained on how to approach and deal with these emotions.
