Respect For People Staircase: Developing Self and Others

We have posted about the 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 staircase before. We will continue to speak about it in the future because of the divide between what seniors believe and how employees actually feel in most organizations.

In this video clip, taken from a virtual training session I conducted for the Association of Talent Development, we explore the fourth step in the staircase – Developing Self and Others.

This may not seem like a step that belongs in the staircase but investing in people’s development is one of the best ways to send a clear message that you care about them. It is also one of the biggest examples of how companies talk a better game than they play. Why? Because in many organizations, when things get tough and goals get missed, the development budget is the first thing to get cut.

You may be thinking, “what does developing people have to do with navigating the emotions of change?” It’s a fair question; the answer is one of emotional connection to the organization. Stephen Covey used to talk about making deposits in an emotional bank account to build trust. If all you are doing is making withdrawals, trust wanes quickly. That concept applies here. Change is highly emotionally charged as people go through the grief process.  𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 staircase represents the emotional deposits a company is making, helping to create the climate of resilience needed during times of change.

The question you should ask is, “what does your company’s emotional bank account look like, and could you benefit if you stepped on the deposit by developing self and others’ step?”
