Respect For People Staircase Step 3-Seek To Undertand

We talk about 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 in terms of an eight-step staircase.

The lowest step in the climb is treating people with “Dignity and Respect.” In this step, organizations attempt to govern their way to an RFP culture with training on ethics, diversity, inclusion, and harassment.  This training is important, don’t get me wrong.  However, genuine 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 can only come through leadership.

The second step is “Teamwork.” Here the trap we see companies step in is they define high-performing teams based on metrics and output instead of behaviors and trust.

The third step in our staircase is one of communication, and it is defined as seeking to understand.

Several months ago, I had the pleasure of teaching the staircase to a group during a virtual Association of Talent Development event.  Here is the clip on how I learned about communicating by seeking to understand.

Think about how this concept applies in the world of change leadership as you watch the clip.

How much more effective would change implementation be if all involved their communications from this perspective?
