Change-Grief-Change: Navigating The Emotions of Change

In our experience, most organizations consider the emotions their people exhibit when change is implemented as “resistance to change” when, in fact, what they are actually witnessing are the stages of grief playing out in the workplace.

In this clip from an interview with Jeanie Coomber, host of the popular Warriors At Work podcast, we talk about the key takeaways from our book and provide some insight into this common change management trap.

When implementing a change initiative, most organizations ask questions like, “Is the change right for our strategy?” or “do we have the right technical solution?”

Studies indicate those two things only account for about 30% of initiative failures.

Instead, organizations should be asking themselves:

Is our culture ready to support this change?  In other words, do we have a 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 culture and an 𝘌𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭/𝘗𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦  operating environment for our people?

Are our front-line leaders ready to support our people through this change?  Have they been trained on navigating the emotions of change and supporting their people through the change emotionally?

Is our change management process robust enough, or is it nothing more than a communication plan?
